The truth about the recent government attempt to ban "M855" type AR-15 ammo

Many people aren't gun enthusiasts.  I am and have always been.  I have a custom AR15 with which I remain proficient.  I have thousands of rounds of many kinds of AR15 ammo but none of the M855 type.  So as a service to those who are not gun enthusiasts or who are confused about the whole thing in general, let me offer common sense, plain talk insight based on real world experience on this matter.

First off, there is nothing all that special about M855 ammo.  It has a steel tip, that's it.  It does not imbue the ammo with special powers and magick.  M855 is just another minor variation on the common ammo for the AR15 rifle which will shoot either .223 caliber or 5.56 (AKA 556) millimeter ammo.  All 556 ammo is very powerful.  Common muzzle velocities are very high - in excess of 3000 feet per second.  If you get hit with 556 of any kind you are in a world of hurt.  A bullet proof vest of a high enough class can indeed stop all types of 556 ammo from penetrating the body but in all cases it will be like someone smashed you in the chest with a baseball bat.

The claim for M855 being "armor piercing" comes from the fact that the steel tip does not mushroom as easily as a lead tip.  This means that the lead tip bullets will flatten more quickly has they hit the target.  This "mushrooming" of the tip spreads out the energy of the projectile.  If you are not wearing a vest, the bullet enters the body, mushrooms and fractures and does a lot more damage than if it just went straight through.  The bullet proof vest attempts to dissipate the energy of the bullet before entering the body and thus it is more effective if the bullet mushrooms out upon contact, thus spreading the energy over a larger portion of the protective vest.

So this is the armchair quarterback theory behind calling M855 "armor piercing" but as you can see from this video, that is just propaganda.  The truth is that modern body armor can stop the M855 with no problem.  Cops have the best gear.  They wear the highest rated protection all the time.  Thus, the attack on the M855 is purely political, purely an attempt to criminalize one of the most common types of 556 ammo.  It is for the very reason that M855 is not able to penetrate vests that I don't own any!  The steel tip does not provide any special take down power of those wearing vests while actually making it less useful for self defense against those who don't.  In fact, this supposedly magical round is only marginally better at penetrating steel plate as you can see for yourself in this poorly done video.  Additionally, M855 is not as accurate as other types of AR15 ammo and IMO accuracy trumps all.  With accurate rounds you can aim for the head thus making the whole discussion of body armor moot.

So now you know the truth: attempts to ban the M855 have nothing to do with the official story.  Everything the Obama administration does is a lie and a cheat designed to con the people out of their money, their rights, their privacy or their freedoms.  Anyone who listens to even a single word coming from this group is just plain old gullible or worse.  How many times do they have to be caught in lies and corruption before common people finally just give up on them?  How many times does the public have to be fooled before it takes upon itself more responsibility for getting the real facts?

I want to finish this post with one final thought: IFF M855 were such a marvelous armor penetrating round then that would actually be a good constitutional argument to make it legal!  Here's the thing:  I don't own my AR15 for hunting.  People who try to tie political decisions that affect my 2nd amendment rights based on whether or not the equipment in question is useful in hunting or not need a swift backhand to the chops.  The 2nd amendment is not about hunting, folks!  It's about being able to defend yourself against ALL attackers be they criminals on the street or criminal thugs running the government.

If government has armor piercing rounds that they would use against me in order to force me to do their unconstitutional will, to impose their martial law on me, to steal my rights, my property and my life, then I need access to the same equipment to defend myself from them because I don't trust the sons of bitches.  They have not earned my trust.  In fact I think those who do trust them are fools.  History sides with me on this and the founders of America did too.  THAT is what the 2nd amendment is about, not some ridiculous right to use guns for hunting and sport shooting at targets.  It's about my ability to declare all out war on those who have done the same to me.

Some are of the opinion that this is yet another push to make ammo less affordable, since M855 is sold often as surplus for about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of .223. Thoughts?

Nah. 855 is the same price as any other "plinking" grade 556 like FMJBT (Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail) XM193. If it were any cheaper then I would have bought some of it even though it has the shortcoming of not being very accurate.
