When will people learn?

You cannot trust the police.  They are either corrupt, evil or just downright incompetent.  A well meaning lady found this out the hard way recently when she was accidentally shot and killed by a police officer during some kind of stupid training exercise gone wrong.

"The 73-year-old was there as a student in the citizen police academy, a two-hour course intended to give an intimate look at what makes the department in the quaint Florida town work. On this night, the group of 35 would tour the station and talk with officers, an essential part of academy curriculum that has gained popularity cross-country amid a heated national debate about police violence.
When it came time to get involved, Knowlton volunteered.
The hosting officers chose two students to role-play in a lethal force simulation, a scenario intended to demonstrate how and when officers decide to pull the trigger. Knowlton played the victim, Charlotte Sun photographer Sue Paquin told the newspaper, and a Punta Gorda police officer played a “bad guy.” These scenarios are usually safe, acted out with either fake or empty weapons.
But when the officer’s gun was fired, Knowlton — a mother, wife and career librarian — was hit with live ammunition."

This is wrong on so many levels.  Here we have the cops trying to get the people to empathize with them using a role playing exercise so that when cops shoot innocent people there will be some in the population who don't hate their guts.   These cops are supposed to be well versed in gun safety.  There is something that every trained gun owner knows called the 10 commandments of gun safety.  As you can see from below, RULE 1 is to treat every gun as if it was loaded.

The problem with cops is that they are just completely complacent about gun safety. They think themselves above all laws and of course the cop who shot this lady will be given a 2 week paid vacation (AKA suspension) and then told to "walk it off" and "these things happen" as the family places Ms. Knowlton into the ground.

If I had done this I would be up on manslaughter charges, period.  "I didn't know the gun was loaded" would not have been a defense.  This cop either goes down for manslaughter or it's just another blatant example of a two speed legal system that must either change by due process or be changed by other means.
