For decades, the people of Puerto Rico were happy to be a US territory. Under this label they got to be called Americans and got to base their economy on the US dollar while having a large degree of autonomy to mismanage their finances (i.e. run a big debt Ponzi). But now that its debt Ponzi is in full collapse, it has decided to
let its people say if they are for or against their little island to become the 51st US state.
The accompanying tweet from Ricardo "Ricky" Rossello (current governor of Puerto Rico) reads, "we voted for (chose) the future option that our homeland deserves". Why he thinks Puerto Rico "deserves" this is hard to fathom but its pretty clearly related to his liberal mindset. He thinks he deserves something just because his thinks so. Verrrrrrry liberal, Ricky.
Of course, this nonbinding referendum is really nothing more than a cheap distraction move by its politicians to give Marque and Patricia living there the false hope that there will be a new teat to suckle from. In truth, the US has enough freeloaders already and in any statehood bid the rest of US would probably be called upon to pay off PR's now-in-default debt. I don't see this as being a realistic outcome with Trump at the helm.
Puerto Rico is now entering the early stages of
Kubler - Ross:
- denial <--------------------------------- are="" here="" span="" they="">.--------------------------------->
- anger
- bargaining
- depression
- acceptance
For decades it has lived beyond its means by racking up debt. But the payments finally caught up to it and now it will not be receiving any more loans any time soon. Instead it will be hounded to pay for past debts. Those who lived in the past have effectively stolen from the younger generation. They borrowed the labor of the future so that they could live better lives. Now the new generation is stuck with the bill and no way to pay. So the bill is not going to be paid. This is why government indebtedness is, was, and always will be a total scam regardless of how big or small the borrower might be.
